Shourayi – Essays

I fondly remember while celebrating the annual midnight Easter service at the St. George Church in Mangeshi, children were allowed to read an essay, Shouraya, that was about any topic their heart desired. For example: the Church, Raes ( mayor), our village, their parents, the priest, deacons, or even the daily life of the villagers. These Shourayi contained some of the most memorable stories ever written. They were beautiful, timeless and triumphant. It was such a wonderful idea that allowed children to present their feelings and sentiments about Easter and what it meant to them during the annual Easter service. They were especially striking, as the angelic voices of the children reciting them, reminded the parishioners of the innocence and fragility of the world around them.
I have always felt that this tradition should continue throughout our many parishes across the world. My suggestion would be to have a formal award committee who would decide upon the winning Shouraya (essays) and bestow prizes upon the winners. This competition would enhance the role and importance of our language (Syriac) amongst our youth and assist in the preservation of our mother tongue. It would serve as motivation for teaching and encouraging the ability to read and write our language. Just imagine if we had a collection of these essays over the last fifty years published in a book. What a marvelous time capsule it would have been for our community.
We should set up an educational foundation and call it: Shourayi Educational Foundation of St. George/Mangeshi. This could preserve and give a voice to our hometown. The annual Shourayi competition would be open to all children of the St. George Church/Mangeshi from the ages of 7 to 19 and would be organized through the assistance of the church. Every student would be competing in one of the following categories:
• Category A: Students in 1st-6th grade of primary school.
• Category B: Students in 7th- 9th grade of intermediate school.
• Category C: Students in 10th-12th grade of secondary school.
The top three essays would be awarded a prize as provided through the foundation. This celebration would encourage our young minds and give them something to look forward to and work towards annually.
As we near Easter and rejoice in and celebrate its importance, I would encourage you all to think about this idea for our youth. Let’s make this time of the year a memorable one for them, in the way that is was so memorable for us as children.

شورايي- بدايات أتذكر باعتزاز في كنيسة مار كَوركَيس الشهيد، منكَيشي وحينما كنا نحتفل بقداس عيد القيامة لمنتصف الليل، كان يسمح للأولاد [الشمامسة] لقراءة مقال يسمى شورايا عن أي موضوع يعجبهم وغالباً ما كان يعكس الحياة القروية. تلك المقالات هي عندي من أروع الذكريات التي قيلت، فقد كانت جميلة ، دائمة في البال، و مبعث البهجة . لقد كانت فكرة رائعة تخصب خيال الصغار ليعبروا عن مشاعرهم وأحاسيسهم عن القيامة وماذا تعنيه وكانت فقرة ضمن القداس لتلك الليلة. لقد كانت الشورايي مؤثرة للسامعين الكبار وخاصة انها كانت تقال برقة الصوت الملائكي لهؤلاء الصغار الأبرياء. دائماً يراودني شعور بأن مثل هذه التقاليد يجب ان تستمر من خلال ابرشياتنا في كل مكان. واقترح تأليف لجنة تقرر اختيار افضل شورايا وتمنح جائزة لصاحبها. مثل هذا التباري سوف يعزز من دور لغتنا ” السورث” بين الشباب وتحافظ عليها. انها بلا شك سوف تكون حافز لقراءة وكتابة لغتنا. يمكننا ادراك مدى اهمية هذا الأمر لو اننا في كل كنيسة جمعنا كل الشورايي لآخر خمسين سنة الماضية ووضعناها في كتاب. كم من مخزون مبدع سوف نجمعه لأجيالنا القادمة! اقترح تعيين مؤسسة ثقافية ونسميها: مؤسسة الشورايي لكنيسة مار كَوركَيس الشهيد في منكَيشي. هذه سوف تبعث صدى مسموع لقريتنا. ومسابقة الشورايا السنوي تشمل الأحداث من عمر ٧ – ١٩ سنة وتنظم بمساعدة من قبل كنيسة مار كَوركَيس الشهيد في منكَيشي. وكل مشارك سوف يكون ضمن احدى هذه التصنيفات: – تصنيف أ: لطلاب المرحلة الابتدائية. – تصنيف ب: لطلاب المرحلة المتوسطة. – تصنيف ج: لطلاب المرحلةا لأعدادية. والفائز من كل تصنيف يمنح جائزة من قبل هذه المؤسسة. مثل هذا التكريم سوف ينشط عقول الأحداث ويتطلعون لتقديم فعالياتهم سنوياً. وبما اننا نستقبل عيد الفصح المجيد قريباً، فإني اود من كل واحد منكم ان يفكر ملياً بهذه الفكرة لمصلحة شبابنا. دعونا ان نجعل من هذه الفترة تدخل في ذاكرتهم، وبطريقة لا تنسى كما كانت لنا إذ كنا أطفالاً. وكالمعتاد، أتمنى لجميع المنكَيشيين في كل أنحاء العالم، وبالأخص احبائنا الباقين في منكَيشي، عيد فصح سعيد، والرب ينعم عليكم جميعاً.
