Baptism Registration at Our Parish St. George in Mangeshi

By: Francis K. Khosho

The Mangeshi Parish Birth Registration, which began in 1884, is the single most important resource for tracing our ancestors. Before 1884, there were no records in Mangeshi detailing an individual’s birth, showing proof of his/her birth, or the date of their Baptism. Instead, the testimony of their parents and extended relatives was enough. The government’s civil registration census was not introduced until 1947; thus, making the information we find in our church records so vital to knowing and understanding more about our family roots and extending our family history. My hope is that the Parish Registry, consisting of birth/Baptism records, marriage records and death/burial records, will be digitally imaged in order to assist in the preservation of our ancestry. Currently, we have a tremendous effort taking place from the youth in Mangeshi to assist in the maintenance and conservation of our Parish. It is clear to me that they have an unparalleled love for our village, our heritage and our community, past and present. We must all offer our encouragement and support of this youth group as they continue to make decisions and pour their efforts into the safeguarding of our records, as this is no easy feat.

Recently, on the Mangeshi Diaries Facebook blog, our dear friends, Ibrahim Osi, Dr. Rabi, Hanna Shumon, Sam Desho and others have had discussions about this subject. It has reignited my interest and encouraged me to continue the conversation via all mediums, so that as a community we can ensure our legacy is not lost. In the mid-eighties, Father Polis Chanto visited the city of Chicago, Illinois and took the time to travel to Springfield, where my family resided. When I had the opportunity to speak with him face-to-face, I asked him several questions about the Baptism records in St. George Parish in Mangeshi. Father Chanto told me that back in the late fifties, when they were just students in the Institute of Mar Yohanan Habib in Mosul, the records of Baptism in St. George Parish were patchy and not organized. The entries were made on loose sheets of paper and stylistically sporadic. Seventy years later, they were copied into a log book, by both Bishop Hanna Markho and myself. We went through the paperwork and began to list the entries chronologically by date of Baptism. This log book still exists today and serves as a valuable point of reference.

But, the question remains, why did we start recording births/Baptism in 1884? Why were there no records of marriage and death/burials? Here is my hypothesis: 1.) Perhaps the records of birth/Baptism were made at the request of the Bishop in charge of our diocese for their own tracking purposes. But if that was the case, a second copy of the records should have been sent to the Bishop. But a record of these copies do not exist. 2.) I think the Turkish government was involved in recording births in Mangeshi and throughout the Ottoman empire. They began the recording process for two purposes: taxes and determining available military manpower. The Ottoman government during the last two centuries had no census of its own. They made self-serving estimates of their population in order to support their own political or diplomatic ambitions. One of their methods was simply accepting the estimate of local priests (See “The Ottoman Census System and Population, 1831-1914.” Stanford J. Shaw. Int. J. Middle East Stud. 9 (1978), 325-338, p.325). However, there is formal record of census surveys that were conducted throughout the Ottoman empire in 1876-1878, which only included males, and again in 1882-1885, which included a household’s family name, its members, including children and birthdates. The dates of these surveys coincide in time with the beginning of Baptism registration at our Parish St. George in Mangeshi – 1884. Therefore, it is very likely that the Ottoman government was requiring the tracking and registration and is how our registry came to be.

Our Baptism registry serves as such an important tool, not only to verify the sacraments, but also as a verifiable legal document of our existence and welcoming into this world. Here is a poignant example: we lost our family home in the California wildfires of 2007. Both my wife and I lost all of our legal documents, including paperwork regarding our immigration status and United States citizenship. Our Parish of St. George in Mangeshi was able to issue and formally seal our Baptism certificates and send them to us back in the United States. Our identities were instantly restored. Having this support and connection with our history is profound. Being able to trace our ancestors and family trees is a necessity and important to our preservation as a community. We are indebted to our Parish and the work of our people, past and present, in maintaining our history. I lend my support in any way that I can and I encourage us all to do the same.
