His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Polis III Nona celebrated the Mass of the Fifth Sunday of Easter on May 3, 2026, at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Sydney, as part of his pastoral visits to the parishes of the eparchy following his election as Patriarch.
In his reflection on the Gospel of the day, which recounts the third appearance of Jesus after the Resurrection (John 21:1–14), Patriarch Nona spoke about the action of Peter when he recognized Jesus standing on the shore: he took his garment and wrapped it around himself, for he had been naked. His Beatitude explained, as reported on the official page of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in Australia and New Zealand, that “the sense of nakedness in Sacred Scripture symbolizes the human person’s awareness of sin before God, prompting him to cover himself, as occurred with Adam and Eve after the Fall.”
His Beatitude further emphasized “the importance of adhering to appropriate attire before God, in the church and in every place not merely from a social standpoint, but because it reflects one’s faith and expresses reverence and veneration for the presence of God in one’s life.”
