The faithful of the Patriarchal Archdiocese of Baghdad welcomed Patriarch Polis III Nona this morning, Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Chaldean Cathedral of St. Joseph in the Karrada district, in the first reception held for His Beatitude by the faithful of his patriarchal archdiocese before his installation.

Among those participating in the reception were Bishops Shlemon Warduni, Ephrem Yousif Abba, Bishop of the Syriac Catholic Archdiocese of Baghdad, and Basilios Yaldo, the Patriarchal Auxiliary, along with the priests of the Archdiocese of Baghdad, the religious sisters and consecrated women from the congregations serving in Baghdad, the deacons and female deacons, young children, and various groups of the faithful of the archdiocese.

The ceremonies began with a musical welcome presented by the Scout team in honor of His Beatitude the Patriarch. The priests and deacons then began chanting the liturgical entrance hymn “Shabbah l’Marya b’Qudsheh” (Psalm 150: “Praise the Lord in His sanctuary”), followed by the order of prayer together with hymns performed by the Patriarchal Kokhi Choir.

At the beginning of the service, Chorbishop Nadhir Dakko, pastor of the cathedral, delivered a welcoming speech to His Beatitude. This was followed by an address from Bishop Yaldo, who expressed thanksgiving to the Lord for the election of Patriarch Nona, who wished to meet with the faithful of his flock in Baghdad before the ceremonies of his installation.

Referring to Saint Joseph, patron of the cathedral, His Excellency stated that Patriarch Nona would work quietly following the example of Mar Joseph, and would continue the path of his predecessors in leading the Chaldean Church, those who “preserved the deposit of faith.” He concluded his remarks with a personal reflection about his knowledge of His Beatitude the Patriarch, affirming his readiness to work together side by side.

After the people recited together a prayer for the new Patriarch, Patriarch Nona delivered an address drawn from the Gospel passage in which Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” (John 21:15–19). Patriarch Nona pointed out that Christianity “in its essence is not merely a moral system, but a relationship of love.” He explained that this calls us to confront the temptation of escaping into activity while our hearts are not with the Lord, and that even if we fall, we will learn from Peter to become more prepared for service, especially since “leadership in the Church is not ownership of people, but caring for them with love.”

He concluded by saying: “In the end, Christ does not ask a person: How many times did you fall? Rather: Does your heart still desire Me?” He stressed the need for all of us to answer this question and asked everyone to pray for one another in continuing the journey begun by those who came before us.

His Beatitude thanked Bishops Shlemon Warduni and Basilios Yaldo, the priests, deacons, choir, young children, and all the faithful who participated in welcoming him today. After the deacons chanted the liturgical hymn “B’ai min Marya w’Sallaw Qdamaw,” His Beatitude granted his blessing to all those present and greeted them one by one.
